The Department of Psychiatry’s 15th Annual Research Forum “Extravaganza”

The Department of Psychiatry’s outstanding contributions to science were highlighted during the 15th Annual Research Forum Extravaganza on September 11th, 2024. The forum included three engaging data blitz presentations showcasing the incredible span of psychiatric research in the department, ranging from science focused on neurons to neighborhoods. Our presenters this year included Katherine McMurray, PhD, “Understanding shared neurobiology of comorbid disorders: AUD, Panic, and PTSD;” Perry Tsai, MD, PhD, “Aren’t You Better Yet: Toward an Understanding of Long COVID and Mental Illness;” and Tina Grieco-Calub, PhD, “The role of hearing experience in language development during early childhood.” The Department also hosted Ted Abel, PhD, Roy J. Carver Chair in Neuroscience, Director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, Chair and DEO of the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology, University of Iowa, who delivered the dynamic keynote address, “Epigenetic Mechanisms of Memory Storage.”

Following the presentations, members of the Psychiatry Department had the opportunity for further scientific dialogue during the poster session featuring over 90 scientific posters. Impressively, the majority of poster presentations were led by trainees within the Department who are actively engaged in basic science, clinical, clinical translational, and psychosocial research. A hearty congratulations to the poster competition winners, including First Place Anisha Nagpal (MD/Neuroscience PhD student), Second Place Jacqueline Sanchez (Neuroscience PhD student), and tied for Third Place Andrew Burns (MD/Biomedical Engineering PhD student) and Hyerim Yang (Medical Sciences PhD student). A huge thank you to the scientific program committee, Drs. Elizabeth Glover, Olu Ajilore, and Perry Tsai, who made the event such a success.
