Dr. Stewart Shankman, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry and head of the Chicago Lab for Emotion and Physiology in UIC’s department of psychology, has spent years devoted to researching depression and similar internalizing disorders. Dr. Shankman’s research focuses on the relation between depression and anxiety disorders, with an emphasis on neurobehavioral studies examining common vs. specific emotional processes between the two. He also has important line of research examining the familial transmission and course of internalizing psychopathology. Currently, Dr. Shankman is the Principal Investigator on an NIMH-funded research study as part of the RDoC initiative examining whether particular biobehavioral processes are not only characteristic for depression and/or anxiety, but also whether these processes connote risk for these debilitating conditions.
