UI CDR Awards its First Professorship in Mood Disorders to Dr. Luan Phan

UI CDR in partnership with the College of Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry created a new endowed Professorship for Mood Disorders. The UI CDR Professorship is the first-of-its-kind honor, awarded to Luan Phan, MD, Associate Head for Clinical and Translational Research in the Department in recognition of his national leadership in translational research related to depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders.

Dr. Phan received his undergraduate and medical education, psychiatry residency and research training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Currently, he is Professor and Associate Head for Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).  At UIC and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, he directs the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Research Program, a multidisciplinary clinical-research program that takes an affective and cognitive neuroscience approach to improve our understanding and treatment of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders. His research has been consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Affairs for the past 15 years. He has over 175 peer-reviewed publications, and he is a Principal Investigator on 3 active NIH R01 and 1 VA Merit Award grants. He is a Primary mentor to 4 current NIH K Awardees. He serves on the Scientific Council of the Anxiety and Depression Disorders Association of America and is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP).

Last year, President Obama honored Dr. Phan with a PECASE, an honor bestowed upon independent researchers in the early stages of their careers. PECASE recognizes and supports scientists and engineers who show exceptional promise for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge and reflects the Obama Administration’s commitment to developing outstanding scientists and engineers that contribute to the growth and prosperity of our Nation.
