6th Annual Dr. Carl Bell Memorial Lecture

 

Remembering Dr. Carl Bell and Honoring his Legacy: Annual Carl Bell Memorial Lecture, October 1, 2025

The UIC Psychiatry Department gathered for the annual Dr. Carl Bell Memorial Lecture on October 1, 2025, honoring the prominent community psychiatrist and former Director of the Institute for Juvenile Research. Dr. Bell was an extraordinary man who dedicated his work, influence, energy, and passion to the community, and always prioritized the underserved and underrepresented.

As a psychiatrist, Dr. Bell an impressive list of accomplishments – author of over 500 publications, recipient of the American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Service Award and the Adolph Meyer Award for Lifetime Achievement in Psychiatric Research, member of the National Academy of Sciences Board of Children Youth and Families, and Member of the National Advisory Mental Health Council of the National Institutes of Health.

To honor Dr. Bell’s indelible legacy, Dr. Donald Warne, professor in International Health and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health  spoke at the 6th Annual Dr. Bell Memorial Lecture on “Substance Use and Recovery Strategies among American Indians in the Great Plains”. Dr. Warne is an acclaimed physician, one of the world’s preeminent scholars in Indigenous health, health education, policy and equity, as well as a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He is also Johns Hopkins University’s provost fellow for Indigenous Health Policy.

It was an honor to welcome him. His outstanding work represents the legacy of Dr. Bell through his leadership, tireless research and academic contributions to caring for people in our communities.
